About Our Clinic

Our History

DID YOU KNOW THAT RICHMOND UNIVERSITY VISION CARE IS ONE OF THE OLDEST PRACTICES IN CANADA THAT SPECIALIZE IN EYE AND VISION CARE?

Serving Toronto

Since the 19th Century

Since Toronto’s Victorian period there was a small group of skilled craftsmen known as “mathematical instrument makers” who made and retailed optical instruments. Some of these practiced their trade as “Opticians” on King Street, then Toronto’s main commercial thoroughfare.

In 1860, Charles Potter (1831-1899) was already the premier retailer of scientific instruments in the country. Through time, as the profession evolved, the practice changed into an optical and later optometry practice. Richmond University Vision Care can proudly trace its lineage directly back to Charles Potter and continues to this day as Toronto’s favourite optometry practice.

Our current location is not too far from where it all started!

In Memory (1957-2020)

Dr. Carolyn Jarrett

For almost 40 years, Dr. Carolyn Jarrett had been the trusted and beloved eye doctor to many of our patients. She was a leader and pioneer in the profession as the first Black female optometrist to graduate in Canada. It is with great sadness that we inform of Dr. Jarrett passing away in 2020 after a long illness.

Her passion and life was dedicated to the wellbeing of her patients, as she had treated them as if they were old friends and family. Her compassion and her well known sense of humour, will be missed.

As of January 2021, Dr. Jarrett’s associates will continue her legacy and take care of the patients in the practice with the same compassion and excellence in care.
